Kardamyli
A Journey Through 3,000 Years of History

Kardamyli is one of the rarest destinations that has preserved its name and location unchanged since antiquity. From the Archaic Kardamyli of the Free Laconians and the Byzantines, to the Maniate Kardamyli of the Captains, this place has always been a symbol of freedom.

During the Ottoman occupation, the Filiki Eteria designated it as a base for the Revolution, and it was from here that Kolokotronis and the other chieftains began the struggle for the liberation of the nation.

Kardamyli in the Iliad and Mythology

As Strabo mentions, the city was built on a steep rock, constituting one of the most fortified positions in the area. The first historical reference is found in the years of Homer, where in the Iliad it is described as one of the "seven well-governed cities".

According to Pausanias, Kardamyli was one of the seven cities that Agamemnon promised as a dowry to Achilles. Legend has it that the Nereids came out onto Salio beach to admire Achilles' son, Pyrrhus, on his journey to Sparta to marry the daughter of Helen of Troy.
